Lovely staff comfortable rooms
I stayed overnight with my husband. We had a lovely welcome from staff, the room we had was comfortable and clean. The room had a glass of prosecco and chocolates which was part of the package. We had food at the restaurant and the meal overall was enjoyable. My husband and I are vegetarian and we were happy with our choice. Breakfast was a mix of self service and you decided on what you wanted if you were interested in a cooked breakfast.
The hotel is in a quiet area and there are some shops a short walk away.
Two night Romantic Lazy Break...
We booked a two night Romantic Lazy break through yourselves, to include a bottle of Prosecco and chocolates in our room on arrival (which we received, but due to tragic events did not drink on our break).
The hotel was nice, and staff friendly/hardworking (If slightly understaffed, but due to the present economic climate/cost cutting/profit margins etc the country finds itself in we find this often.)
The weather was great, location OK. The room was nice, having tea/coffee,TV. Drinks in the bar were a little pricey, but I suppose comparable to most Cotswold hotels. The garden and patio areas were nice to have a drink in after touring the local area.
Breakfast both morning's were nice, a help yourself buffet.
Due to an unfortunate, regrettable and sad incident which occurred in the restaurant, the restaurant was closed on our first night and we did not receive our inclusive meal ( 30/person allocation) which we had prepaid in advance of our arrival, so we are unable to comment on the evening meal. (It would have been nice gesture to have been offered the option of having our meal transferred to the second night when the restaurant was open, but this was not offered.)
Overall, staff good/pleasant and hardworking, hotel OK, rooms OK, breakfast nice, min drive from some nice villages and tourist attractions ....nice hotel if working in the area or manage to get a deal.....
Sudbury House Hotel
It was okay / one towel in room / food awful menu very limited. Paid 198 through country hotel breaks - due to flooding purchased the next night for 88 on hotels.com with breakfast this price is more reflective of the place - skipped dinner on second night wouldn t want to put myself through the trauma again - breakfast was reasonable but tea and coffee is undrinkable if you want a English breakfast or decent coffee Americano you have to pay for it - so basically with country hotel breaks paid 120 for a bottle of Prosecco and meal which was not value for money very basic food and menu was limited choice sat in a freezing cold restaurant eating food which was awful Tough steak only once choice on menu. Saying all that the staff were absolutely wonderful people who really tried hard to make our stay as nice as possible - Thank you to the staff who made a disappointing experience feel safe,
Sudbury House short break
Nice hotel with average rooms and facilities. The town it s on the edge of is not very pretty and has very few facilities, not a pleasant evening stroll. The hotel was fine but not as luxurious as our previous Cotswolds hotel breaks. Friendly staff and rooms were clean.
Okay but restaurant was a big diappointment
An evening meal was part of the deal and we booked a table for 7:30. No mention was made of any problems or conditions at that time (5:30pm ish).
Once in the restaurant, we were told that there was a function, with food, in another room so our service would be slow. The menu (the waitress could only find one copy) with a very limited selection was produced and we were told that no other food could be offered.
As several staff members rushed back and forth at the whim of the 'function' guests, we were left with a single waitress serving the three tables in the room.
The food, when it eventually arrived, was okay but nothing to enthuse over. By the time we'd eaten our main (9:30) we felt it too late in the evening for a dessert and left. Having had no personal contact or pleasantries with any staff, we were accosted by a man, I believe he was head waiter or something so a stranger to us, loudly called us back to sign for the meal. He loudly totted the bill and declared us to be under our price limit so there was nothing more to pay.
I am not embarrassed to have an inclusive meal in a hotel deal but do I want it announced to the room? Had we gone over out limit, I would not have attempted to leave without paying. Indeed, it would have been nice to have had some decent food to have bought instead of the meagre fare offered. I am irked that the only contact any staff could offer was this and done without pleasantries or politeness.
On a positive note, our experience meant we ate out the next night and enjoyed the finest steaks we have had in a long time. The Woodman Inn at Fernham should you find yourself in a similar position.
The rooms in the hotel were excellant and very clean. So full marks to housekeeping
When we arrived at the hotel there was no one on reception and this was apparent for much of the three days of our stay.It seems that although the staff were very helpful they suffered from a lack of sufficient staff for a four star hotel.
We found the food served at breakfast on all three days to be luke warm even though on two of the days it was served to order. the final day was buffet style and although on a hot plate was still not as warm as we would like it.Regarding Dinner. This was very disappointing and noticable by a lack of choice for somebody staying more than a couple of days.
Winter weekend
Very noisy until midnight with music from wedding party which took over the whole hotel including the restaurant and bar, which was unfortunate for guests like ourselves who were not part of the wedding celebrations.
We had booked a bedroom with a wet room, so that I could access the shower with ease, I am on crutches and can t step up into the shower. No room with a wet room was available so I was unable to shower and wash my hair for the whole weekend.
It is a hotel lacking in character, the food was better than we expected but the menu was the same each evening. We won t be returning anytime soon.

Appreciating that COVID restrictions were still in place my stay could have been better I booked for a three night stay for myself and my Labrador Sadly only stayed two nights we were given a room two doors into an extended corridor which with the hotel being fairly full had a lot of people traffic day and night and although we were out quite a lot the noise caused the dog to be unsettled which led to intermittent barking which I was worried was disturbing other guests and meant me not being able to relax myself I mentioned when we checked out that it would have more sense as I had a dog with me to be put in a room the other end of the corridor where there would have been less if any traffic Also and really a bigger disappointment was my dietary needs I have Serious Gluten and Lactose allergies and despite being informed ahead of my stay there was no vegan spread to put on my gluten free toast at breakfast and despite being offered a cream tea as part of the package there were no scones For a hotel of this quality and the price paid I was very disappointed
