Stonehouse Court Excellent

This hotel is full of character , love the history on the walls before you go into the restaurant .
Staff friendly and polite , dogs are welcome in the bar area.
Bedrooms are nicely decorated with roll top baths , the bed is very comfortable and the pillows .
Plenty of drink choices in the room with biscuits.
Highly Recommend

Disappointing.

SH, West Yorkshire, stayed: December 2024

We are an older couple who stayed for 3 days Twixmas. Our first impressions of the hotel were good. The original building is impressive, externally and internally, and the welcome from reception was friendly and efficient.

Our room was in the original building. It was spacious but 'tired'. The 'carpet' had obviously been chosen to be hard wearing rather than for comfort and had numerous marks/stains. The cold and breeze coming through the 'old' ill fitting windows was dealt with by pulling the heavy curtains. The heating did not come on until 5.00 despite check in being from 3.00. We eventually worked out how to turn on the heated towel rail in the large bathroom to warm that room which was bitterly cold when we arrived.

We enjoyed a drink in front of a large open fire in the comfortable lounge bar before going into the restaurant for dinner. And there our enjoyment of the evening ended. The food was ridiculously overpriced and, to say the least, not good. For example, the 22 steak and ale pie (with mash and jus/granule gravy) was obviously mass produced and contained the usual sludgy 'gravy' with a few shreds of meat. If we hadn't had the 70 allowance as part of our package we would have found somewhere else to eat on the final 2 nights of our stay. We finished up eating burgers on the premise that it would be difficult for those to be ruined.

We were unable to turn on the shower on the second morning of our stay which was an omen for the buffet breakfast which was awful. The 'hot' food was barely lukewarm or simply cold. When I reported the problem with the shower the receptionist commented that a previous occupant of the room 'had reported the same problem 3 weeks ago' so she knew what to do to enable us to turn on the shower.

When we checked out our comments regarding the food at dinner and breakfast and the problem with the shower had obviously been passed on to the 'manager' as our bill was substantially reduced.

The staff at the hotel deserve better than having to repeatedly apologise for problems in the hotel and regarding the food. They are unfailingly cheerful, helpful and efficient which is far too rare these days.

Good hotel

Anon, stayed: December 2024

The hotel is lovely, the staff are attentive and helpful, welcoming reception. The downside was our room, where we had several ladybirds appear daily. This was reported to the reception and they were removed, but need to eradicate the issue completely.
Booking process with Offpeak was okay, we were called a couple of weeks before we were due to arrive stating there were Christmas parties on and that we should move our dinner reservations or expect a delay. A little annoying when we had booked this a few months prior. We didn t change our reservation and it was fine, but unnecessary concern before arrival.

A really lovely traditional hotel in a historic house with modern extensions

CC, Wiltshire, stayed: November 2024

Reception welcome among the best, and overall staff were very friendly and approachable and happy to chat.
Room was top notch - in the original 1601 Manor House with lovely view across the canal to the hills.
Restaurant - ingredients very good and most evening meal dishes well prepared, although on one occasion due to delays in the kitchen the fish was left too long waiting for the chicken dish to be prepared. On another occasion we placed our orders and waited 35 minutes for the starter because of poor prioritising in the service - another group arrived later, and were served their main courses before our starter was even prepared. So some organisational issues in the evening to attend to but on the whole the food was very good. We would recommend one different off-the-main-menu option every day, as once you had eaten two meals you started to run out of options.
The breakfast choice and ingredients is good but the bacon was consistently over-cooked so really nice British bacon was crispy and crunchy, and not good. Also no-one wanted the US style streaky bacon, so it was always left until last, when you had no choice but to eat it. Otherwise a good all round breakfast.
The location is excellent and great for canal walks.

A nostalgic visit

JF, Victoria, stayed: September 2024

We stayed at Stonehouse Court for a 2 night stay in September. The reception staff were rather inexperienced and did not advise/ remind us that our booking included 70 worth of food and drink and had no record of the dinner booking we had accordingly made for the first night. In the end we were credited for our food but not for the drinks so did not receive full value for what we had booked. The directions to our room were also a bit vague but the room facilities in the old part of the hotel were very good and the breakfasts and dinner were enjoyable.
The main reason we wanted to stay at Stonehouse Court was because it was the subject of a drawing by my husband's grandmother who lived in Stonehouse as a girl. Her parents' family home is still standing and they and her brother are buried in the graveyard next door to the hotel.
