Lovely relaxing break

Maureen, Kent, stayed: August 2018

Widbrook Grange is a warm welcoming hotel. Our room was large and comfortable. Comfy beds with lovely fresh linen . Welcoming tea tray refreshed daily. Restaurant provides gourmet meals beautifully presented. Duck and lamb were fabulous. Wine waiters were friendly and extremely helpful. Breakfast buffet was excellent with traditional hot courses to follow, again beautifully presented. We will come back!

Lovely location and helpful staff, bed and wifi let it down

Charlotte, stayed: September 2018

My partner and I stayed at Widbrook grange for a long weekend as a relaxing break in the country in September 2018. The location was lovely, with scenic walks in both directions along the Kennet and Avon canal and an easy flat stroll to Bradford on Avon. The house is lovely, with homely, warm and welcoming areas to sit and read or have a glass of wine and chat. The gin bar was excellent, with a wide range on offer. The breakfast was good and we had breakfast in our room on the final morning which was an added treat. Our main reasons for rating the hotel as OK rather than excellent was the bed (which in the classic room was surprisingly small and very soft leading to a restless night of poor sleep), the wifi, which didn't work at all in our room in the hay barn, and the Sunday lunch, which sadly was a real disappointment (beef was fatty throughout and overall wasn't as tasty as we'd hoped). There's definitely some room for improvement which affected our impression of value for money. For me the bed and quality of sleep is so important on a weekend away and it was a shame that this let the hotel down.

Peace and Quiet

JW, West Midlands, stayed: October 2018

Overall we found the hotel good.
On our 2nd night I had an unpleasant experience in the restaurant, I found the menu rather limited (I don't eat fish or offal) and so I ordered the chicken and bacon salad. The chicken looked and tasted nothing like chicken. It was rubbery and tasteless and I think it was not a fresh chicken breast but a preformed one. I could not find any bacon in the salad. I told the waiter of my concerns, he argued with me (loudly) and at my request removed my main course. I was still hungry so requested the cheese course. I was nowhere the 30 allowance for dinner but was nevertheless charged 8 for 6 wafer thin biscuits, 3 tiny bits of cheese and NO butter. Also the septic tank was fairly smelly (I know that's no ones fault ) but thought you would like to be aware of this. Pool was good.

Widbrook Grange says...

Dear Mrs Wheeler,
Thank you for taking the time to provide your valuable feedback. It is deeply disappointing to read your review and learn that your experience fell short of meeting expectations.
In response to your comments about your dining experience, we can assure you that we do not use offal as an ingredient in any of our menus and have a variety of meat dishes available such as duck, steak, beef burger, lamb, ravioli and salads. Our chefs use fresh chicken breast, and use a suvee bath to cook the chicken to ensure it is tender and moist. We do not pan fry chicken. Portions are vacuum packed for maintaining freshness and our bacon is thinly sliced until crispy mixed with salad leaves.
A cheeseboard includes homemade fig chutney with butter available on request. Your package entitled you to £30 dinner allowance per person, if you exceeded this allowance you are required to pay for extras on departure. We can only apologise if you were charged extra by mistake and will happily refund you if a copy of receipt is provided.
Please accept our apologies for the disturbing smell you experienced. Since your stay we have liaised with a specialised engineer to investigate the root of the problem.
Once again, thank you for sharing your insightful comments and it is our hope that you will allow us another opportunity to impress you in the near future.
Warm regards,
Hakan Tiryaki
General Manager

Birthday break

Anon, stayed: January 2023

We enjoyed our stay, room was lovely, very hot on arrival but we turned radiators down. Had to ask about pool/gym we were show round and used the pool only downside was swimming lessons which hadn t been mentioned. Restaurant lacked charm and character, food was good but more choice would have been nice. We were left a bit disappointed as took a while for drinks order to arrive, beer arrived and waitress slipped and it went all over me, I had to go and get changed, wine arrived after we were served our main course. I know accidents happen but felt we shouldn t have been charged for the drinks. All in all a charming hotel. Gin bar was amazing.

Mixed review

FH, Somerset, stayed: May 2023

Service and friendliness could not be faulted. Food was a bit of a disappointment - dinner lacked flavour but breakfast choices were good. Bar excellent if you like gin. Room (ARTIST'S) was on 2 levels with steep narrow stairs between bedroom and bathroom - to be avoided by elderly and disabled. A very unstable(broken?) side table not fit for purpose. Ground/garden interesting with several places to sit.
