Disappointed with our stay

JM, Greater London, stayed: September 2024

The room and the bathroom are dated and needs updating. On the first day we did not have hot water.I had to have cold shower and my wife had to have shower in the pool area.
The water was not draining both in the basin and the bath.We had to take shower with bath full of water.
The service is okay and possibly need more staff.
On the positive note,Chef Georgina took care of our dinners as we are vegetarians.
Overall, quite disappointed.

Aims for shabby-chic, but is just shabby!

Jon P, Hampshire, stayed: October 2024

This was our second stay at Widbrook Grange - the first (about 18 months ago) was lovely and we were really looking forward to returning. We can't believe how much Widbrook Grange has deteriorated in that time. Our most recent stay was more Fawlty Towers, than Fawlty Towers itself!

Our biggest areas of disappointment were...

1. When we were shown into our room we were met with several iron-shaped burn marks on the carpet. When the receptionist saw us looking at them he reassuringly said "don't worry, we know these weren't you!"

2. Then we quickly established that the heating in the room wasn't working. Our genuinely-friendly receptionist came back and fiddled with the electric heater, told us it was on a complicated timed system and that it would probably come on shortly. It didn't... ever! He said that we could have a small electric heater he had in reception, but by the time they understood our radiator was broken that heater was being used in the conservatory - it eventually arrived with us about 11pm.

The issue was complicated by the fact the gas boilers in the main building had also failed. Once they got them back up and running, they tried to convince us that our electric heater would be OK, too. Obviously it didn't as they are entirely unrelated systems!

3. The floor tiles in the shower area were broken and loose, to the point of being dangerous. The hotel had tried to cunningly hide the broken tiles under two rubber bathmats. But as soon as you stepped on them they moved. Sharp edges of the tiles jutted up between the mats - showering in a "luxury" hotel has never been so trepidacious!

4. The swimming pool floor was equally poor. Many sections of the floor has lost the tiles, leaving lots of opportunity to shred your feet. The whole area is in need of a makeover - the paint on the walls was peeling/flaking in several areas, too!

To top it all off, when we (happily) checked out the following morning, the receptionist on duty apologised about the heating and reassured us that maintenance were coming in to look at it. When we said that we were disappointed with the room, she happily told us that it was due to be refurbished in the coming weeks. Clearly, that didn't help us though! It did make us wonder why they'd continued to let it out in its current state.

The staff, to their credit, were very friendly but clearly over-stretched and harassed. The duty manager was literally doing every front of house job that evening, which meant everything was rushed and/or delayed as he ran from pillar to post.

We have no intention of going back to see if they have fixed the heating or refurbished the room. Thankfully we were able to see the funny side of the situation, but not everybody would, especially if it was a special occasion.

Disappointed and not up to our expectations

JC, Dorset, stayed: October 2024

Staff were helpful and pleasant. The hotel, we were told, was shabby/chic but shabby was more appropriate. Our room in the Piggeries was scrappily furnished and the furniture was more damaged than distressed. The en suite just had a small windowsill to put our things on. The shower woke us in the middle of the night dripping loudly and we had to put a towel in the bath to stop the noise. We didn t feel shabby chic extended to the mould on the skirting board and the black dirt along the front of the bath was unpleasant. The toilet cistern handle hung down and if pushed the wrong way the water didn t stop running through the cistern. The restaurant menu was limited in choice and expensive. The odd chairs were not comfortable to sit on. A cautionary note - the hotel driveway sits on a blind bend on a main road with a 50mph limit. The only pavement is on the opposite side of the road and we came close to being run over on walking back from the bus. It was a disappointing experience

Saved by the food

Anon, stayed: January 2025

Spent 2 nights here on a DBB package. The building is in an OK condition and has a nice little atmosphere. The room was fairly big with large windows but had several issues. Wardrobe door wouldn t shut, bathroom door lock did not work and could not be properly shut. Decor was more tired than chic. Bathroom sink had no hot running water. Heating worked on the 1st evening but not on the 2nd night. Made reception aware of all the issues with the room and it was promised maintenance would fix them but we saw no evidence of anyone ever coming to look at the issues. Second night we complained about the heating and again a promise of a heater was all we had. The heater obviously never turned up.
The only upside of our stay was the food. I would visit the restaurant again.
Shame as the whole experience could have been made much better if the staff had cared about hospitality just a tiny bit.

Disappointing

VL, Dorset, stayed: September 2024

The food was fairly good. Service patchy, housekeeping poor maintenance worse.

The bathroom needed a refurbishment and painting. The bath panel was disintegrating, the grab handle rusty. A dressing table drawer had no handle. The bedhead and wardrobe needed dusting. The Roman blind needed hemming and the window sill painting. The bedroom was cold but they wouldn't put the heating on. There weren't enough portable heaters for each room. The lounges only sat 6 and we we were in a group of 4 which was awkward. I have put this on Trip Advisor together with the photos. Your agency declined to help, telling us to contact the manager, who was on holiday. We were offered an alternative room which was smaller and the wardrobe had no handle. It was also in an annexe but up two flights of steps which were slippery in the wet weather so we declined.

We say...

Thank you for review.

We are sorry to hear the stay did not meet your expectations.

We did not decline to assist and did try calling the hotel and emailed, as you were in-house at the time of emailing us, we do recommend speaking to the hotel directly regarding any issues, so they are able to try and resolve them for you, which in the end you did, they tried to find you an alternative room, but you declined this.

The hotel advised that the bathroom is fully functional, just sadly some paint is flaking away from the bathtub, but everything is fully functioning.

Kind regards,

Off Peak Luxury

Excellent location - poor food.

FM, West Glamorgan, stayed: September 2019

We had a meal allowance of 30 each which didn't go very far when my filet steak was 26.50, starters 9, desserts from 6, glass of wine 5.35. My filet steak was the size of an egg - the smallest I've ever had. The three chocolate dessert items were so small there wasn't enough to get a taste.
Breakfast was very good - a full English.
We had a good time exploring the area but were disappointed with the meals at the end of the day.

Tired around the edges

CB, Wiltshire, stayed: February 2020

Sadly we were very disappointed in our stay at Widbrook Grange. On arrival we noted the very tatty state of the grounds, money has only seemingly been spent on the main areas. Our room looked beautiful but our cold water supply kept going off completely, I burnt myself in the shower. Pool tiny and very tired, we didn't bother swimming. Overall it's not worth the money!

Peace and Quiet

JW, West Midlands, stayed: October 2018

Overall we found the hotel good.
On our 2nd night I had an unpleasant experience in the restaurant, I found the menu rather limited (I don't eat fish or offal) and so I ordered the chicken and bacon salad. The chicken looked and tasted nothing like chicken. It was rubbery and tasteless and I think it was not a fresh chicken breast but a preformed one. I could not find any bacon in the salad. I told the waiter of my concerns, he argued with me (loudly) and at my request removed my main course. I was still hungry so requested the cheese course. I was nowhere the 30 allowance for dinner but was nevertheless charged 8 for 6 wafer thin biscuits, 3 tiny bits of cheese and NO butter. Also the septic tank was fairly smelly (I know that's no ones fault ) but thought you would like to be aware of this. Pool was good.

Widbrook Grange says...

Dear Mrs Wheeler,
Thank you for taking the time to provide your valuable feedback. It is deeply disappointing to read your review and learn that your experience fell short of meeting expectations.
In response to your comments about your dining experience, we can assure you that we do not use offal as an ingredient in any of our menus and have a variety of meat dishes available such as duck, steak, beef burger, lamb, ravioli and salads. Our chefs use fresh chicken breast, and use a suvee bath to cook the chicken to ensure it is tender and moist. We do not pan fry chicken. Portions are vacuum packed for maintaining freshness and our bacon is thinly sliced until crispy mixed with salad leaves.
A cheeseboard includes homemade fig chutney with butter available on request. Your package entitled you to £30 dinner allowance per person, if you exceeded this allowance you are required to pay for extras on departure. We can only apologise if you were charged extra by mistake and will happily refund you if a copy of receipt is provided.
Please accept our apologies for the disturbing smell you experienced. Since your stay we have liaised with a specialised engineer to investigate the root of the problem.
Once again, thank you for sharing your insightful comments and it is our hope that you will allow us another opportunity to impress you in the near future.
Warm regards,
Hakan Tiryaki
General Manager
