Peace and Quiet
Overall we found the hotel good.
On our 2nd night I had an unpleasant experience in the restaurant, I found the menu rather limited (I don't eat fish or offal) and so I ordered the chicken and bacon salad. The chicken looked and tasted nothing like chicken. It was rubbery and tasteless and I think it was not a fresh chicken breast but a preformed one. I could not find any bacon in the salad. I told the waiter of my concerns, he argued with me (loudly) and at my request removed my main course. I was still hungry so requested the cheese course. I was nowhere the 30 allowance for dinner but was nevertheless charged 8 for 6 wafer thin biscuits, 3 tiny bits of cheese and NO butter. Also the septic tank was fairly smelly (I know that's no ones fault ) but thought you would like to be aware of this. Pool was good.

Enjoyed our stay, food was good, restaurant staff great.
Area lovely, hotel in great surroundings.
BUT
I had a problem with something mislaid, wrote to the hotel as soon as I realised this but as yet (3days later) haven t even had an acknowledgement.
Disappointing
Nice stay
Lovely staff, fab food, rooms could do with refreshing, would stay again if the price were cheaper
Birthday break
We enjoyed our stay, room was lovely, very hot on arrival but we turned radiators down. Had to ask about pool/gym we were show round and used the pool only downside was swimming lessons which hadn t been mentioned. Restaurant lacked charm and character, food was good but more choice would have been nice. We were left a bit disappointed as took a while for drinks order to arrive, beer arrived and waitress slipped and it went all over me, I had to go and get changed, wine arrived after we were served our main course. I know accidents happen but felt we shouldn t have been charged for the drinks. All in all a charming hotel. Gin bar was amazing.
Beautiful location in the south West
We were so looking forwards to our stay and the location didn't disappoint. It's beautiful.
Sadly, the hotel is a bit tired and is ready for a refurb. The chairs in the restaurant wobble and we had to swap ours twice. The restaurant was freezing and it took away from the enjoyment our meal. The food however was lovely though, although there are very limited veggie options I found one that was very tasty.
The room was spacious but also a bit tired with thread bare carpet in places. We did live the quirkiness of the room with the beans and the old doors.
It didn't take away from our visit to the area, and we had a nice stay all in all.

Some good points but overall - disappointing.
We stayed for two nights in early September on a Daily Telegraph offer. The plus points were - friendly and helpful staff, comfortable bed with large feather pillows, lovely shower with huge bath sheets, nice food. I'm afraid that our room and the buildings generally were rather disappointing. I'm not sure if the furnishings were attempting to achieve the "shabby chic" look but our room looked as if it had been furnished as a result of a house clearance. My husband went to sit on a chair in reception only to be enveloped in a cloud of dust and the dining room chairs are stained and dirty. The buildings , generally, looked really neglected - one of the handrails leading to our first floor room ( in an outbuilding )was rotten and coming away from the wall ( I reported it ) and windowsills and doors all needed a lick of paint. There are buckets placed around the courtyard which had once, I imagine , held flowers but now sport only weeds. The gardens, too, looked in need of some attention. I think the staff do their best here but some financial input is needed here if this pretty house , in such an attractive location , is to survive as a destination for those in search of a country house break.
Be careful!
I booked a 3 day break for 6 people. 25 pp off each evening meal. However the restaurant was so overpriced it was not possible to have any 2 course meal without a surcharge. One couple had to pay an additional 129! There should be several 2 course meals available for 25. The food the first 2 evenings was small on quantity and extra for vegetables!!!! On leaving there is a 10% service charge including on the 25 given for free each night. We object to this current trend of adding the service charge. We give one when it is our choice. We do not give one when it's added. We do not want unpleasant practices coming in from the USA. We will not recommend Widbrook nor your website.
