Mixed Feelings
This is a very nice hotel, with beautiful gardens, plenty of character, and a lovely terrace for fine days. Room 201 was fine, nothing special, and with no views, but with a huge shower. Staff were courteous and friendly, but service was variable - on our first morning, nobody came near us for 20mins to offer coffee, tea, or to take breakfast order, but on the second morning we were attended to immediately, by a different team. We enjoyed the most delightful, tasty lunch on our arrival day, but the evening meal was so disappointing - I had pork which was on the tough side, and my husband couldn't even get the knife through his lamb, so most of it was left. We don't mind paying a lot for a meal we have enjoyed, but for what it cost, this was extremely poor value for a starter and a glass of wine each. Yes, we did quietly complain, but all we got was an "I'm sorry about that". We went out for our next evening meal. It was also quite noticeable, that outside tables were still not cleared of used glasses, well into the late evening. Waiting staff, on the whole, seemed to be very young, and without supervision, and some, not all, need a bit more training.
Will visit again
Beautiful old building relatively small really but so nice. Were in main building, room more than good but opening windows was problematic. Bedroom more that good, bathroom spacious. Breakfast was excellent, loved the honeycomb. Dinner was high quality and service in the dining room was warm and welcoming. We will visit again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this delightful hotel. Excellent value. This was our first time with offpeak-luxury and would recommend it to others.

Wonderful off-peak break!
We arrived for some R&R after my husband had a joint replacement and were thrilled to have been upgraded to the honeymoon suite. The accommodation was wonderful as were the views across the beautiful gardens and countryside. The staff were very friendly and helpful and they quickly recognised us as we moved around the hotel. The history and original features were very interesting. We visited nearby National Trust properties that were very convenient and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Daily Telegraph Two Day Stay
We enjoyed our stay here - there was a slight problem with the tap in the bathroom not shutting off properly but the room staff noticed it and it was fixed without us even mentioning it.
Reasons for above score
Very slow check in due to only one member of staff on reception.
Service in restaurant very very slow, long waits for any service between courses at dinner and food not great.
Breakfast was a disaster having a long time to wait to place a breakfast order and again a long wait ensued, we enquired twice about our order with a staff response that they would check, but still over 45 minutes before it appeared. When the food did arrive it was cold, dry and inedible. By this time we had had enough and left.
The restaurant was not busy at any time we were there so difficult to comprehend the staff and kitchen delays.
We quietly voiced our disappointment at reception, The receptionist said she would look into the problem and they would get back to us, but they never did.
