Friendly hotel
My husband and I stayed with a group of friends. We found the staff very helpful. The restaurant was more than adequate. I would recommend the hotel to couples and to groups.

We stayed as part of a 25 people group. We were well looked after and had a good choice from a fixed menu. The grounds are nice and well cared for.
The only downsides were a quite awkward walk to the room with a heavy case and a lack of hangers
Disappointing.
Would not call this a "luxury" hotel. Three out of four meals in the restaurant were poor.Overpriced. Would not recomend.
Why our stay was disappointing
Polite but charmless receptionist set the tone; gave us the wrong keys!
Room was un-touched by the cleaners; had to make our own bed, etc. When we complained to the(same) receptionist, all we got as fresh milk and cups left outside our door; the room stayed uncleaned. We had tea in the lounge (fine) two hours later, our dirty cups, etc. were uncleared and were there for other guests to see. No-one seemed to care.
I did not expect to be charged for still water at dinner, nor to pay VAT on a newspaper we requested (and had to collect ourselves). The whole impression was poor!
Convenient but Disappointing
I stayed here for two nights in order to visit my brother who lives locally. Unfortunately the room I was given was somewhat inaccessible as were the shower facilities. I had to negotiate several short flights of stairs and with no hand holds dare not take a shower. I eventually found a way out into the garden and could from there enter the hotel via reception although there are insufficient railsleading to the front door.
Room service breakfast was good on the first morning although there was no cutlery on the second morning and jam rather than marmalade was served.
I understand that this hotel is under new management and clearly there are teething problems. I will stay here again, if invited by my brother, and wish you well as you seek to develop this charming ancient building. Nina Mead.
Short break diamond
Our group of 10 were given an excellent reception & the staff were helpful throughout. The location is peaceful and there are very many local attractions which can be worth a visit. The only slight downside was having to order our following nights meal on the day before, but the upside of that was that we all were served together.
Unexpected obstacles
We had one big problem with our stay at your hotel. I suffer badly from arthritis and have difficulty with stairs. We booked through 'Cotswold Hotel Breaks' and asked them to check if a garden room meant ground floor with no stairs. They came back and said that they had spoken to the hotel and this was indeed the case so, based on this information, we duly booked a garden room. On arrival the first thing I saw was a steepish flight of steps to the front door, which I managed to haul myself up with the aid of the handrail. Then we checked in and were told to 'go through that door and down the stairs', to which I reacted with some surprise, only to be told that the only other access was round the outside of the hotel and in the service door (it was dark and raining). I therefore had no choice but to struggle with the stairs and the extremely deep step half way along the corridor for the duration of our stay, and also the additional difficult stairs up to the dining room. I spoke to a different receptionist the next day who said there was a record of the phone call asking about stairs but she couldn't imagine anyone saying there were none! The break was to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary so I was determined not to let the stairs spoil things, but I could certainly have done without them. Everything else was very good including the food.
