Substandard room. Tired decor, but good food.

PF, Cambridgeshire, stayed: October 2024

Stayed 3 nights in what was supposed to be a superior room.
But the room was depressing, with broken window blinds, dirty glass. Paint peeling from timber beams, water damaged bath panel and peeling paint.
Stain on the carpet faulty coffee machine along with poor flushing of the toilet, spoilt what was supposed to be a luxurious few days away.
Food was good as was the service.

Disappointed as noisy with group of men drunk using foul language in bar and garden until 2am

PP, Devon, stayed: March 2024

Hotel is okay. In middle of Main Street. Unfortunately our 2 day relaxing break was spoilt by this group of lads who were drinking and noisy from 7pm ish until 2.00 am. Our room was above the bar and our window was above garden. I weto reception at 1am and complained of the noise and the language being used and the receptionist asked the party to quieten down but unfortunately they didn t and then at 2 am they were stumbling up stairs falling into our door and shouting about what time they were meeting for breakfast. Then 2 of them were in the room above us and took ages to settle down. Therefore we got very little sleep. The second night at about 5am in preparation for a wedding the staff were shifting furniture in the wedding room which was also below us. For the money we paid for a relaxing weekend it was very disappointing. Hotel is very Cotswolds style but there was no carpet on stairs which also made it noisy.

Good but let down by extra charges

David J, Bedfordshire, stayed: December 2017

We booked and paid in advance for a gourmet tasting break. The meal and service at the table were excellent but on checking out the next day we were asked to pay 10 for the water that was allready on the table when we sat down for which nobody had mentioned a charge, plus a gratuity of about 20.  Had this break been a gift it would have been very embarrassing.  The room, despite the break offer sugesting it would be upgraded, was small, we had to discover how to get the heated towel rail to work and it took 2 members of staff on two visits to get the television to work at all. These things should have been checked before our arrival.

Very poor meal in restaurant that ruined our stay

Anon, stayed: February 2018

When we arrived for our cream tea we sat down at a table that was dirty. When they brought over our cream tea they didn't bother to clean the table. The cream tea was delicious and the gluten free scones were absolutely marvellous! The good double bedroom was very cosy and for the offer rate we got, the value was ok but I wouldn't pay the standard rate for it. The breakfast was ok but I'd recommend they get a broader selection of continental food. We dined in the fine dining section of the restaurant but it was very poor. We are both gluten free having told the restaurant twice in advance. They didn't know this on arrival and on a few occasions brought us food with gluten in. When we advised them we couldn't eat it they chucked some gluten free crackers on the table and didn't even bother to remove the gluten food. We had paid £60 each for the taster menu so this was very unacceptable. The manager was very apologetic and has invited us back for a free meal as compensation.

Disappointing stay

David, Kent, stayed: September 2021

Hotel is in an excellent location in the charming town of Morton in Marsh. Checked in at 3pm. Male receptionist polite but not particularly welcoming. Room was very clean and warm, albeit a bit tired and dated. Luxurious Molton Brown toiletries but very cheap mouldy single ply toilet paper. Broken seal in shower which was reported first thing in the morning, but was not fixed during 3 night stay.
First night we had cocktails which was included in our package. - it took the barman by surprise but did eventually find a cocktail list and told us in no uncertain terms that it was only the 10 cocktails included in the package. A younger barman appeared and served us two very nice 10 cocktails. We took our seats In the restaurant, ordered a bottle of wine, and the waitress came to take our order. We ordered our starters, but unfortunately when we went to order our main courses, it transpired we had been given the lunch menu. Correct menu was brought to us, and we ordered our main courses from a different waiter who very apologetic. However, our main courses arrived before our starters and were taken away and our starters then served which were excellent. However, my main course was Fish of the Day, and when it arrived for the second time, it had obviously been sitting on a hot plate and had turned to rubber. The manageress was very apologetic and gave us complimentary desserts, coffees, further drinks and didn t charge us for the bottle of wine.
Breakfast on all three mornings was very nice with attentive staff. The night receptionist was very pleasant and engaging, and wished a goodnight and good morning every day.
The ability to park at the front of the hotel was most welcome.
Excellent location to explore the Cotswolds; however did find far better restaurants and bars in the immediate area.

Food

David, Hampshire, stayed: May 2016

For a hotel of this quality one would expect either greater choice or change of menu after a couple of days.
We asked the waitress if there was any other alternative if we were to stay longer - no there was just the set menu to choose from.
Also as we are approaching our 70's with our room being in the attic it was a long hike up and down although they did offer to carry bags.
