Two night stay

MM, Oxfordshire, stayed: April 2023

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Had lovely room on the top floor overlooking the common and valley below. It was a nostalgic visit having lived in the area many years ago. Slightly disappointed with the restaurant as we had the same menu two nights running and one of the fish dishes wasn't available. The lunch menu was very good though but they don't do the lovely sharing fish platter which we have had in recent years on trips to Rodborough.

Just not quite right

Ian, Berkshire, stayed: April 2023

First of all, let me say that the staff at The Bear are extremely friendly and welcoming and certainly try to be helpful. Unfortunately there are a lot of young and inexperienced staff who seem to lack training, which means that service is a bit haphazard at best.
When we got to our (four poster / premium) room, it was cold and there was no heat from the radiator. After a couple of calls, and suggestions that we turn up the thermostat (which we had done an hour before calling) it was sorted by someone actually turning on the boiler that serves this part of the building. Throughout the stay, the hot water in the bathroom took (literally) 8 minutes to come through - though I was forewarned of this possibility when I asked about the heating.
In the restaurant, I tried to order a glass of Sauvignon Blanc to go with my evening meal, but the young waiter seemed to get a bit flustered, so had to go to the bar about 10 minutes later to chase it up. Someone arrived at the table about 10 minutes later (just as I finished my meal) with a BOTTLE of wine so I had to send it back.
At breakfast, the waiter took my order (Granola bowl with fruit, followed by scrambled eggs on toast) and asked specifically if I would like them served at the same time or separately. I asked that teh granola be brought out ahead of the main dishes, but in fact it just never turned up. For the whole time we were eating breakfast, there were two staff members clearing away about 20 tables and chairs and taking them off to store somewhere - not the relaxing Sunday morning breakfast we'd hoped for!
All in all, The Bear of Rodborough is just about okay for the price paid via Cotswold hotel breaks, but despite the staff being friendly and welcoming, the quality of service lets the place down.

relaxing Cotswold break

YN, Surrey, stayed: April 2023

We received a warm welcome and were given a lovely room; small but had everything we needed. Good breakfast options. Evening meals were well presented - vegetarian options were ok but nothing special. It would have been good to put less gourmet items on the menu too e.g vegetarian burger, pizza, fish and chips to give a wider range of choices and cater for families.

Great location for explorin the Cotswolds

Beautiful setting, excellent staff

Anon, stayed: April 2023

We had a lovely stay in this hotel with breathtaking views from our room. The staff were very responsive. Breakfast was perfect. Not quite so keen on restaurant menu but just personal taste.

Thank you so much for staying with us and for leaving us your feedback. Our views really are breath taking, there is currently a lovely sunset out of the restaurant window!

We have a new Head Chef in place now so hopefully any changes he makes will suit your palate if you should return.

One Night Cotswold Trip

David, Berkshire, stayed: January 2023

The Bear was a great place to stay, lovely location for a walk and to take in the views followed by a pint or two in the bar and a nice meal in the restaurant.

The Wedding

Anon, stayed: December 2022

It is but one complaint only, which we raised with the Manager on the following morning. There was a wedding booked for the hotel on the day we arrived. It was somewhat intrusive, but not so as to seriously compromise our enjoyment - until dinner. We couldn t take the meal in the restaurant because of the function, and therefore had our meal in a room which was immediately adjacent to the hotel bar, where Football was being shown. There were a number of wedding guests watching the TV, which is where the problem arose, because we took our dinner which was throughout peppered with the F word etc. This rather took the shine off things. Our point is that if we had been told at the time that we had made our booking of the existence of this wedding we would probably have taken a different date. This would have been possible, because we made that booking only a few days before we visited, and you would therefore have known about this function. So, perhaps that is something you could put into place in the future, for any guests seeking to visit you if this situation should happen to arise again. A supplementary point is that the Manager said on the morning that he would email us to discuss further this matter, but he never did.

Overnight Stay

Justine, England, stayed: November 2022

We enjoyed the hotel and thought it had a lovely relaxed weather was poor so we made the most of the open fires. My only negative feedback was the dinner menu was a bit limited and three of the bottles of wine we asked for were not available, however the food we had was lovely. We were particularly impressed with breakfast and the choice available.

Not great value or real luxury

Anon, stayed: November 2022

Booked one of the better rooms at this hotel and pretty disappointed it was tiny, just enough space for the bed and two chairs. Staff were ok but not adept at dealing with pushy customers (of which there were many) who didn't bother to join the queue leaving others like me waiting a long time- this happened several times, at check-in, at the bar, at the restaurant, and its just rude to ignore customers who are waiting, so I wasn't very happy with that.
The place is ok, it just doesn't deliver a luxury experience, its just like a pub with small rooms... Not very impressed for the price, I've stayed in better places for the same money.
