Although the room was comfortable, felt that it needed a bit of an update .Walpaper was peeling off in the bathroom .The staff were excellent though and the food was excellent
Disappointed
Having stayed several times, we feel this hotel has gone down hill. The staff were mainly helpful and friendly but not enough of them to keep bar area clean, tables not being cleared quickly or tables not being wiped down. Ate in restaurant first night in package deal disappointed, meals very pretty but minute and unfortunately no flavour, we choose different things but definitely lacked taste. Asked if we could change package following night to eat in the bar, receptionist very helpful and said would be no problem. Unfortunately not much better, starter fine asked to have a 10 min break between courses they said would be fine but was about 30 mins which we didn't mind but when steaks arrived seemed to have been kept warm and only tepid, ate them as we were hungry. Did mention it to the waiter who was apologetic and said we should have said sooner. This experience has put us off returning.
The Bear
Unfortunately, being an animal lover, I disliked having to keep walking by the poor bears in the reception area. That, of course, is my own personal opinion. On the whole we enjoyed our stay. The staff were very good, reception, restaurant, bar and cleaners. The carpet in our bedroom needs replacing as it is worn under the windows and having been told we would be in an Executive Room, was rather surprised at this. The food in the bar area, we found, was actually better than the restaurant. However, the view from our room was spectacular, it was Room 50, I believe, but I cannot remember the name, sorry! Loved the fact that the Christmas decs were up, really made it feel like Christmas!
General
Disappointed with room ,bedside light not working, hanging off wall, room radiator not working, bathroom mirror light not working also hanging off ,bathroom heated towel rail not working, bathroom fan not working. First day my wife and I got locked in our room!!! (Faulty lock) no information book in room ,no number for reception, had to ring hotel number to get reception!! When we were let out we were told "that this happens to room 15 as well!!!!! Just glad we didn't have a fire.
On arrival we were told that rooms weren't being cleaned unless we asked for it to be done (staff shortage) no lift ,quite a struggle up the stairs with the suitcases (no offer of help) (we are both in our midd seventys. Electrics dropped out twice as well (thought the kettle had gone wrong) Disappointed with the whole weekend
An acceptable but unremarkable stay
The hotel is an adequate inn with clean, but not spacious rooms. The front desk staff was pleasant and hefpful. COVID response hampered the provision in various room amenitites and services. The restaurant was often overwhelmed and the meals of variable quality [] some nights they were excellent, some nights not (even when the same dishes were ordered). The outside bar area is pleasant and lively. There are good walks nearby but to see any area sites of interest a car would be useful. The hotel is at the intersection of two busy roads, so there is a bit of traffic noise. Some rooms are more isolated than others from the road [] best to ask for one of those if you're a light sleeper.
A little underwhelming at times
Just felt the customer experience was all about checking the details rather than enjoying the hotel itself. We were never offered our welcoming bar drink although a drink was then deducted from the bill. The menu didn t state there was a 12.5% service charge but the bill did. Reluctantly had to pay that. Felt the drinks also included a service charge as they were very pricey. A pint of cider, double gin and lemonade and two bags of crisps came to 19.50. When you get to the bar you are ushered away to sit somewhere and then they take the order. You can t see the prices or the choices which seems a bit bizarre really. The food menu was quite poor for choice really. Very difficult to find two things you like if you are staying there for 2 nights as we did. You just can t feel comfortable without worrying something is around the corner waiting to trip you up. I wouldn t stay again.
Nice few days away
Hotel looks really nice, room was good size good shower, the main problem was the restaurant service and the food choice restaurant is basic and not inviting several things on the menu not available just a pub quality meal I was expecting a lot better. Breakfast was very good
I probably would stay again but wouldn t eat there
