Wedding anniversary disappointment

Jane M, Gloucestershire, stayed: June 2022

Booked this as a luxury break for our first wedding anniversary
Description of the hotel being on the green is very misleading
The hotel fronts the main road and not The Green
Rooms very average
Service very poor, reception didn t answer the phone despite ringing several times, good job I wasn t having a heart attack !! No welcome drink as promised, had to ask, overall feel was off a tired hotel trying to drum up business. Description totally misleading and as the booking was a surprise it didn t help when reception demanded money despite me having already paid and then shouting out the price to my husband !!!!!

The Bear of Rodborough Hotel says...

Thank you for your email regarding your recent visit

Please accept my apologies that you found the hotels location misleading from the description.

The welcome drink we advise guests to take at their leisure at the bar whenever they feel best suits them, I will be making sure that the reception team are clearly communicating this to all guests.

The poor service and the phone not being answered are disappointing to read but myself and the team will continue to improve these areas in order to avoid a repeat.

The hotel has just had an extensive refurb on the outside areas of the hotel with the entire exterior walls being painted and some fantastic new signage, as I am sure you will understand it is on ongoing process to refurb all areas of the hotel and more rooms and areas will be looked at in the coming months.

Kind Regards

Not great value or real luxury

Anon, stayed: November 2022

Booked one of the better rooms at this hotel and pretty disappointed it was tiny, just enough space for the bed and two chairs. Staff were ok but not adept at dealing with pushy customers (of which there were many) who didn't bother to join the queue leaving others like me waiting a long time- this happened several times, at check-in, at the bar, at the restaurant, and its just rude to ignore customers who are waiting, so I wasn't very happy with that.
The place is ok, it just doesn't deliver a luxury experience, its just like a pub with small rooms... Not very impressed for the price, I've stayed in better places for the same money.

Nothing special

Booked the deal that included dinner, cream tea, prosecco etc but was not offered any of the extras apart from dinner.
Dinner was not great, so wish now that I had booked just a room or even a different hotel.
Just because you use good expensive ingredients doesn't mean that the food is well prepared. Why ask how you want the beef fillet when you serve it completely dry and overbooked anyway?  For £250 for 2 nights, you can get something much better in a better location.
This place has the potential to be nice and welcoming, but its just not.
Everything could be improved here from service, food, decor.

We say...

We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay.

We understand through our further communications with both you and the hotel team, that you did receive the glasses of Prosecco and cream tea, however felt that you should not have to ask for these.

We do ask in our terms of use, that our customers take a printed copy of their confirmation with them to the hotel to present on arrival, which demonstrates all of the inclusions in the purchased package, and that the package has been paid for in full. If a customer has no printer to hand, then the confirmation can be shown on a smartphone on arrival, or we can send out a copy in the post (on request). Following your feedback, The Front of House Manager at the Bear of Rodborough has also taken steps to ensure that the extras are confirmed by their reception team on arrival.

The Restaurant Manager has explained that he did speak with all guests that evening, to ask if they were enjoying their meal. This is done so that if this isn't the case, any issues can be rectified there and then, as they only want you to have a satisfying evening.

We do believe that £125 per night, with dinner on the first evening, glass of Prosecco for two, cream tea for two and a Full English breakfast each morning, is a competitive price for a stay in a Country Hotel in the Cotswolds on a Friday and Saturday night. Being an area of outstanding beauty and easily accessible by motorway to a lot of people, weekends in the Cotswolds are popular throughout most of the year,  Having said that, we do have some cracking winter deals in the Cotswolds at the moment- if we can help find a suitable hotel in future, please contact our reservations team on 0845 2871007.

Kind regards,

The Bear

LW, Buckinghamshire, stayed: November 2017

Unfortunately, being an animal lover, I disliked having to keep walking by the poor bears in the reception area. That, of course, is my own personal opinion. On the whole we enjoyed our stay. The staff were very good, reception, restaurant, bar and cleaners. The carpet in our bedroom needs replacing as it is worn under the windows and having been told we would be in an Executive Room, was rather surprised at this. The food in the bar area, we found, was actually better than the restaurant. However, the view from our room was spectacular, it was Room 50, I believe, but I cannot remember the name, sorry! Loved the fact that the Christmas decs were up, really made it feel like Christmas!

Disappointed

Susan C, Cornwall, stayed: August 2015

Having stayed several times, we feel this hotel has gone down hill. The staff were mainly helpful and friendly but not enough of them to keep bar area clean, tables not being cleared quickly or tables not being wiped down. Ate in restaurant first night in package deal disappointed, meals very pretty but minute and unfortunately no flavour, we choose different things but definitely lacked taste. Asked if we could change package following night to eat in the bar, receptionist very helpful and said would be no problem. Unfortunately not much better, starter fine asked to have a 10 min break between courses they said would be fine but was about 30 mins which we didn't mind but when steaks arrived seemed to have been kept warm and only tepid, ate them as we were hungry. Did mention it to the waiter who was apologetic and said we should have said sooner. This experience has put us off returning.

Relaxing retreat

Anon, stayed: July 2015

We booked a Friday to Sunday stay. Whilst our stay was booked through a deal we were not informed that there was a wedding at the venue until 10 days before we arrived only because our dinner on the Saturday night could not be in the restaurant. When we arrived on the Friday there was a wedding that day too. Whilst the hotel were very good at giving us a room away from wedding guests (of both weddings!!) it did feel like we were the odd ones out every evening when relaxing in the bar and we were gate crashing the pre/post wedding celebrations.
The hotel itself has the usual Cotswold charm, lovely room with big bed. Bar food delicious! Would come back maybe not during a double wedding!!
