Fair comment!!!
Generally an enjoyable stay. Friendly helpful staff, particularly helpful in finding a lost earring!!
Not enough restaurant staff, Breakfast on the second morning was CHAOTIC. Long queues of guests at the buffet, no bacon, no mushrooms, no tomatoes, very little scrambled egg , a couple of fried eggs, tempers became very frayed. Our bedroom was not in the main hotel(, this was because I had a disability issue, and there are no lifts in the main building, & some very steep stairs.). but a few minutes walk to the main building, not very good in the wet, although large umbrellas were readily available.
Same menu for our two night stay, but enough choice, for it not to be a problem.
Lovely grounds, stunning topiary.

We were in need of a break after a difficult time, and the description of the hotel seemed to offer that. Beautiful historic building from the outside, but upon entering and finally reaching our room it became obvious that the Hotel was somewhat faded. The room looked ok at first, but then we noticed the stained carpets, bare electrical lamp wires, dirty paintwork around the door handles especially in the bathroom. The make-up mirror light did not work and the bottom of the shower doors were dirty. I suspect this was the result of poor housekeeping.
We were woken up every morning around 6.30 a.m. with a lot of noise either from above or the adjacent staircase. On the positive side we did enjoy the Restaurant and Bar. The staff there were extremely professional and helpful. We also enjoyed the grounds, especially the Topiary Garden and the knowledge that Shakespear had stayed there.

The front of house staff were quite sultry and rude and moreover very unhelpful with location information. It took almost 45 minute to check out of the hotel as there was a trainee working solo. When I asked her if anyone was helping her she was quite unnecessarily rude.
The spa changing rooms were filthy and in need of updating.
Restaurant staff were very friendly and the food delicious however.
We won t be returning.
Lovely building and grounds
We had a nice short midweek break. All the staff in the hotel and spa were very friendly and any requested were sorted without a fuss. I had a nice massage in the spa. As other people have commented some of the areas are a little tired but I realise that the hotel is due for some work soon. The food in the restaurant was well presented and just the right amount for me to manage all 3 courses. More lighting in the bedrooms would be helpful to read by and internet access in the rooms was poor.
A mixed bag
This place has the potential to be wonderful and I am sure it will be once the refurbishment is completed. The meal was very good, nicely presented and our waiter charming and attentive. We were unhappy with the room and it was a busy weekend but sitting with coffee by the log fire was delightful, and finding some spare and available wellington boots for a walk the next morning a lovely touch. Very impressive was senior management's response to feedback. I will go back once the work is done - but not before.
If you go - and it is in a gorgeous spot not far from the RSC at Stratford - talk through which room you are being allocated and avoid the ones on the top floor..
Quick break away
On arrival there was no booking found leaving us a little uneasy after long journey to get there. The receptionist was quite relaxed about situation saying reservations were closed on a weekend and hadn t passed the booking through. We did get a lovely clean room it was comfortable. The Spa is in desperate need for up grade when I mentioned it to reception she said it was in process, but this does not stop the Spa changing area to be clean. There was big piles of dirty towels and the showers were dirty and hair in plugs and on the floor. The Spa wouldn t stop me from staying again I just wouldn t pack my costume.
OK but not as good as expected
Arrived at check in. Told we were on second floor. No lift. No porter service.
Asked to book restaurant but told it had to be early 6.00 or late 9.00 because there was a large block booking. Made to feel less important. Eventually negotiated forcibly and got 6.45 though we wanted 7.30.
Ate at 6.45 left at 7.45 and throughout there were 7 unused tables!
Food excellent. Service ok but waiters rushed and showed no interest in us a guests.
Not a four star level of service at any stage apart from quality of food.
Recent 2 night stay
Was very disappointed when the same menu appeared for our second night, with just two minor adjustments to the soup of the day and the fish of the day dishes. Not acceptable for a star hotel. The food was delicious but the choice, or rather the lack of it, was appalling. The restaurant could be a huge selling point for the hotel.
A number of design faults with the Spa area. No jacuzzi!!!! Arghhh!!! Extremely small changing room which was crowded with 3 people in it. Again, it could be superb.
Fantastic location for visiting Stratford upon Avon.
