R and R night away
Corse Lawn was this years annual night away before Christmas with two other couples. This is year 5 and we always try somewhere different.
Corse Lawn did not disappoint. I ll start with the reception and check in. It was straight forward and no issues, possibly the member of staff didn t quite get our English humour but everything was done correctly . We were shown to our rooms which were the standard doubles. We were pleasantly surprised. Each had character and individual decor. They were more like suites with seating and desks. The bath was a luxurious size. The fruit bowl, homemade shortbread and loose leaf tea and coffee pot with real milk kept in the fridge was a treat.
Before dinner we moved to the lounge and sat round the open fire. Staff were attentive if a little formal at times. Shortly before our table booking time we were served appetisers. The wine list could have kept me entertained by the fire all evening. It is beautifully written, honest, knowledgeable and the passion lifted off the pages. I feel I learnt quite a lot from it. The menu had some interesting and hearty choices. The food was perfectly prepared. The service was friendly and we were made to feel comfortable. After the meal we returned to the lounge where we were served coffee or tea and petits four.
Breakfast once again did not disappoint. Freshly cooked and the quality of the ingredients was obvious. There happened to be an important rugby match on and staff were happy to accommodate a small party of guests in the bar to watch. A few other went for a walk round one of the routes given in the room welcome pack. The weather had been atrocious the day before so unfortunately it was a bit more like a paddle so we admitted defeat and returned to the fire to read Sunday papers and the coffee table book giving some background about the Hind family.
All in all a splendid 24hrs. Fabulous food, lovely rooms and great company. We re an active group and given the weather was so poor on the Saturday when we arrived we took the opportunity to look into Gloucester. The Cathedral was interesting but the rest felt a little run down, the torrential rain probably didn t help. If we could book some good weather so we could get out for a decent walk I think we d definitely book again, or indeed for another 1 night stay just to enjoy the food again.
My biggest compliment would be that at no point were we made to feel like second class guests given that we booked on special deal . Other nights away that we ve had we have been treated differently to other guests, even having to dine in a separate dining room or given different menus. Corse Lawn staff gave us the same attentive service as every other guest and made us feel welcome.
Fabulous Independently Run Cotswolds Hotel
This hotel is a real gem. It is in a fairly quiet area of the Cotswolds but with many larger towns such as Cheltenham very nearby.
It is not your usual chain hotel so you need to appreciate that it will be a little different to other places. It is family run and they are passionate about what they do. The food and wine lists are both excellent.
Just do not expect the typical corporate style and embrace the individuality of a very traditional hotel. There are so few of these left now, it is well worth appreciating this one.
A very enjoyable three day stay.
The hotel itself is very attractive and informal in style. We were welcomed and made to feel at home and taken to our room. The hotel is not a modern building and this gives it its ambience. The room was very comfortable and the only criticism of the whole stay was that the lighting was sufficiently dim that its was difficult for more than one person to read on the comfortable sofa. The lighting beside the bed was satisfactory. There was leaf tea and ground coffee available at all times. The bathroom was large and the water piping hot.
The food, particularly the breakfasts, was of a high standard. The restaurant provided excellent dinners of a quality that would be hard to better. The wine list was hopelessly out of date, particularly for red wines - it needs urgent attention. After dinner, the lounge was very welcoming with a generous log fire, so good for a chilly February evening.
We could recommend the hotel and restaurant wholeheartedly.
Another wonderful stay
We have stayed many times at this wonderful hotel. Relaxing atmosphere with helpful staff, superb food and many little extras in your room that are greatly appreciated (bath robes, mini fridge, loose leaf tea, homemade biscuits, bowl of fruit, sofa etc etc). We look forward to our next stay.
Amazing
Had a fabulous 3 nights here. The food was outstanding.

Delightful
Stayed here with my wife and family (2 grown up girls). Instantly made to feel welcome. Lovely rooms with lots of finishing touches (e.g. bowl of fruit, fresh home-made biscuits, current magazines to read). The log fire was lit in the lounge outside the restaurant, where we had coffee after dinner. All staff were accommodating at every turn. Would love to go back when we can afford it! :-)
