All round fabulous

Philip, Wiltshire, stayed: September 2020

Everything was superb, loved the clean lines and pale decor, restaurant was elegant and food very good especially the carbonara. Room was spacious with a lovely view overlooking the lush green grounds. We enjoyed a generous cream tea on the terrace. Quiet small hotel with no children- perfect.

Staff were helpful and attentive. Had to ask twice for Champagne. Food was sub standard. We still enjoyed our stay but it certainly wasn t luxury.

Friendly and very helpful staff . Food was excellent! On the negative site, the room under the roof was to hot to have a good sleep . Hotel looked dated in some part of the building . They definitely need a window cleaner and some flowerpots in the lounge ( looks a bit empty )

Poor communication prior to arrival .No Lift and room on the fourth floor!. Staff at hotel good

RW,Bucks, stayed: September 2020

The main issue I had was with the booking process and poor communication from you and Mercure. The confirmation email from countryhotelbreaks said check in at 2.00pm, when I arrived at 2.30pm I was told check in was at 3.00pm. Our room was ready which was good but the other members of our group's room was not available till 4.30pm.
I paid for an upgrade by phoning Mercure. They quoted me a price which I agreed to but was charged 20% more and hotel offered me a free drink on arrival which did not materialise.
Hotel has no lift and with rooms on the fourth floor I was glad I was only staying 3 days. This information could easily have been included in the pre booking details as I am not as young as I think I am anymore!
Phoned the hotel with a question and ended up at their Philippines call centre who were unable to answer the question and, quite frankly, did not have a clue. Suggest the hotel answers its own calls rather than divert them overseas.
On arrival the drinking glasses in both rooms dirty with lipstick, returned to staff with comment.
Once we got over all these initial issues the staff at the hotel gave good service, the food was good and Covid procedures implemented well. Without the pre arrival issues and the check in I would have rated the hotel as good overall rather than OK.
The reason I will not return is that I don't want to go through all the pre arrival issues and I will avoid booking at any Mercure Hotel and also be very weary of any Accor group hotels.

Bowden Hall Hotel says...

Dear Alistair Wemyss,

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write a review following your stay at the Hotel. I am sorry to read that you had some issues prior to your arrival here at the Hotel.

Unfortunately due to the ongoing COVID19 pandemic we are having to change a number of protocols and while we try to ensure that these are communicated to our 3rd party agents in a timely manner, on this occasion we were not able to contact everyone who had previously received the confirmation prior to the change in check in time. Due to the Government guidelines which state we need to leave a bedroom unoccupied for a period of time before being occupied we had to amend the check in time.

We have a number of upgrades available and I can see that you upgraded to our superior suite which is a £50 supplement per night whereas the Privilege rooms are £20 per night.  I have checked the Countryhotelbreaks website and am happy to confirm that the website does mention that we don't have a lift at the hotel.

We have a telephone platform to allow our reception staff to concentrate on the arrival of guests rather than entering reservations however if you wish to speak to reception then this is option 0 whereas I believe you would have pressed option 1 which would take you through to our reservation team for accor hotels.

I am sorry that you will not be returning to a Mercure Hotel or Accor Hotel in the furture and wish you all the best in your future stays and thank you for bring your concerns to my attention

Kind regards,

Gavin

Stay at Bowden Hall

Michael, Essex, stayed: September 2020

We had a pleasant two night break at Bowden Hall. Covid rules made the experience different from usual. The evening meal was good but limited and breakfast again limited. The break was very good value for money.
