3 day break
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Bowden Hall. It is a beautiful building in a lovely location. The staff are friendly and welcoming, our room was clean, we enjoyed some very nice food and the extras included in the price made a much needed break away very good value for money,
Hotel needs a revamp...
The hotel is in pretty poor condition - two out of 3 of the windows in our bedroom had rot. We also spotted moths upon arrival and a moth-eaten carpet. Given the state of these rooms I would have expected to have been upgraded to a better room the moment we pointed this out, but only a similar room was offered. Clearly the rooms shown on the website have been updated and they are the more expensive ones. So you don't really get what you think you have paid for.
The food was a bit of a rollercoaster. We were served a mousse that was advertised as a souffle, and a chicken burger that was advertised as a "kimchi" chicken burger. When we asked, the restaurant manager said "no there's no kimchi in the burger as we ran out, is that ok?". It was of course not ok, but there was little we could do at that point given that everyone was hungry. The conclusion is that the restaurant is hit and miss (mostly miss).
The deal on the cotswold hotel breaks website is a good way to get people through the door, but overall I'd rather have spent more and gotten what I paid for. The staff did their best and we very pleasant throughout our stay. They're an asset to this otherwise run down location.
We probably will not be returning.
Enjoyable retirement gift
A lovely getaway as a retirement treat for two!
Friends break
Our group of 10 go away for a couple of nights get together once a year. We are all retired so are flexible on the times we go, and we were all very pleased with the deal we were offered. The hotel staff were brilliant except for a slight mix up on our extras on the bill where some wasn t allocated to the right room. The area around the hotel is beautiful but you do need a car to visit the best places.
Spoiled by poor management
Good room, especially when taking a dog and very good housekeeping and restaurant staff. However stay was marred by total lack of dress code in the brasserie. On the coldest night of the year when it had been snowing most of the day, we found it unpleasant to have one diner wearing shorts and another coming into the restaurant in a sweaty tee shirt and jogging bottoms (just out of fitness suite?). We found this rather disrespectful to other diners and certainly not the standard expected in a 4* hotel.
