Disappointing

Dionysis, stayed: August 2021

Witney is such a beautiful place but unfortunately, our stay at The Blue Boar was disappointing. The hotel description is so misleading. As a result, instead of the boutique hotel that we were expecting, we found a restaurant with some rooms attached to it. There are no spaces dedicated to the hotel guests apart from the busy restaurant and pub. The room we were given was a very basic ground floor room with people having their beer literally just outside our window. A mouldy bathroom with missing light bulbs and an extremely noisy ventilator completed the picture. Although the members of staff at The Blue Boar were all friendly and polite, it was definitely not the experience we were hoping for. And, most annoyingly, when we contacted the Country Hotel Breaks customer service to complain about the misinformation on this website, they didn't seem to care too much.

I was charged for an Executive room that certainly did't match that description.

AB, Buckinghamshire, stayed: August 2024

My wife and I stayed for one night at the Blue Boar as part of the celebrations for her birthday. I booked and paid for what was described as an "Executive Double Room". The room that we were allocated (Room 5) was at the top of a steep and narrow staircase and posed somewhat of a health and safety risk to guests like us who are in their 70s. especially as there was no offer to help us with our luggage.
The room had supposedly been refurbished but that clearly hadn't included dealing with the cracked paint and mould on the lower half of the window or the sun-faded top of one of the bedside tablesThere was nothing about the room that deserved the title of Executive. It did have a 5 foot bed but otherwise it was only the size of a single room and the shower/bathroom was so small that you had to leave the door open while towelling oneself dry. The shower was certainly not a "power shower" as advertised.
In summary I felt that the quality of the room had been significantly overstated and in consequence that I had been "mugged" which was very disappointing.

We say...

Thank you for your review.

We are sorry to hear your stay did not meet your expectations.

We contacted the hotel and they have confirmed you were indeed allocated an Executive double room.  They also confirmed that these rooms all have powers showers.

We do recommend mentioning any issues you may encounter while you are at the hotel, so they are given the chance to rectify them for you.

Again, we are sorry the stay did not meet your expectations on this occasion.

Kind regards,

Country Hotel Breaks

Great food and lovely staff but shame about the room

MP, West Sussex, stayed: June 2021

We spent 2 nights at The Blue Boar whilst visiting Blenheim Palace. The location was good and the food in the restaurant very good. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Unfortunately when we entered our room we were very disappointed as it was more shabby than chic! There was nowhere to put our clothes other than 2 hangers each in the wardrobe - no drawers at all. There were naked light bulbs, the bath was coming away from the tiled wall and no dials on the shower so it was down to guesswork. We also had a broken toilet seat and battered bin. Our room was number 16. We were aware that due to staycations everywhere was fully booked up so we just got on with it. We have complained to the Blue Boar since we got home but have had no response. If you just want a meal here then we would recommend it but not the place to have a luxury weekend away.

I guess the place was for what we paid I did expect even sure we had the
Superior room paid for - room was a bit tired and drab , but the superior part was probably the toilet
Seat held together with white gaffer !!
Rooms accessed via hall and stairs that also service toilets, so most times there was that particular
Bouquet . On the second day en route to breakfast confronted with vision of staff attempting unblock
Disabled loo , which was a test for more than one of the senses I can assure you , but it did calm my appetite some what.
Restaurant itself was were not bad , but overpriced.
Enjoyed our trip but have to say the hotel / pub disappointed.

Rooms a little tired

Anon, stayed: July 2021

We had a lovely 2 night stay overall.

It's a terrible location to find parking. Not the hotels fault but this does really let it down.

The hotel itself is lovely but we found the room to be pretty tired. It needs a lick of paint as the walls were very stained and the bathroom has suffered mould as the bath panel was made out of wood. Everything available and a fridge in the room which was a bonus.

The manager kept everything running efficient and smooth and was a very hard working gentleman.

Overall we had a great stay and witney is lovely, it's just a nightmare to park.

Parking limitations make it a little awkward other than that everything was good value for money and we would visit and stay again

Nice overnight stay

Patricia, Gloucestershire, stayed: November 2022

We stayed for 1 night on the Thirsty Thursday deal. The staff didn't seem to know what it was which was a little embarrassing when we got into the restaurant but was soon sorted! We enjoyed our stay. The Blue Boar is in a very good spot in the middle of Witney. The parking could be a problem because although free parking available on the street and car parks it is only for 3 hours and it means keep moving the car!
