History of the hotel

As part of the Barony of Combe, The Manor House was very much the heart of the breathtaking medieval village of Castle Combe.

Originally built in the 14th century to replace a Norman Castle that had fallen into a state beyond repair, The Manor House had many Lords of the Manor. The most influential of which, is believed to be Sir John Falstaff who was immortalised by Shakespeare in Henry IV. The Barony of Combe continued for some 850 years until 1947 when The Manor House was sold and has sympathetically evolved to become a beautiful hotel, capturing the essence of it's historical charm.

Birthday treat

KD, Bedfordshire, stayed: March 2019

First saw this hotel back in 1981 when as a young couple we visited Castle Coombe and promised ourselves we would come back to stay in the Manor House Hotel. For my 60th Birthday treat this is what we did and it lived up to the expectations of those bygone years, Fantastic!

45 years at the Manor

PO, Bedfordshire, stayed: March 2019

This was our third visit over a 45 year period, and on this occasion we only stayed for 2 nights. Very comfortablle, peaceful and relaxed. Excellent cuisine and service in the restaurant. Our time was out of season so the Hotel was very quiet. Beautiful location of course and everything immaculate. If there have to be some negative comments; - we would have appreciated some help with our luggage - overnight bags - but our room was up some steep steps and there was
no lift. We found several rooms somewhat underlit for reading purposes, and the corridors rather cool and some of the rooms were also a trifle underheated we felt. There was some very up to date IT in the rooms - we would have appreciated a visit from room service to show us how they all worked ! The wifi was variable too - which we wouldn't have expected in this class of Hotel. Overall impression - very good - but could be better ! We felt it was a pity there were no spa facilities.

Seriously Special Stay

SC, Cornwall, stayed: February 2019

From the moment we arrived, we felt indulged. Gorgeous room overlooking the beautiful grounds, picture perfect village and amazing food in the Michelin stared restaurant. The Manor House Hospitality was second to non, as we were treated to a bottle of bubbly and a fabulous room upgrade,
(On top of all that, we were blessed with the most beautiful weather)
Thank you for a really special stay.

Excellent

ST, Select County, stayed: February 2019

We were a little nervous having booked our stay through a third party company offering reduced prices but we delighted to be allocated one of the best rooms in the main house, a huge room and a mass of old oak beams and quirky period features. The house it self is delightful, again quirky and full of character. The service is excellent, the staff seeming genuinely happy to work there. The setting is magnificent and we were lucky to have two days of brilliant sunshine, not something you often get in mid-February. The restaurant is excellent, of course you could make minor criticisms, and at this level and price I think you are entitled to, the venison in the taster menu had little flavour and was swamped by far too much cummin in the sauce, but generally it was an excellent, elegant refined meal. The following night we had the standard menu which was again excellent. Overall hard to fault, a most enjoyable stay, not cheap but for a special occasion (this was our ruby wedding having spent our wedding night here 40 years before) just right.

Perfect couples retreat and special occasion MUST!

Katie Pix, stayed: February 2019

What an utterly magical stay - it's not an overstatement to say that The Manor is the most memorable and all round best hotel I've ever stayed in. We visited for my partner's 30th birthday and had no idea what was in store for us. The moment you enter the quintessential chocolate box village that is Castle Combe, you know you're in for a special escape. Pulling up to the Manor House is hugely impressive (it's a stunning building) but it's nothing compared to the welcome you get from the incredible staff who bend over backwards to make your stay the best it can be. The rooms are incredible (we stayed in Broadmead) with enormous fireplaces, huge beds, more space than you could possibly need in a hotel room and a brilliant bathroom, all blending the period features of the property with brilliant modern touches (a Nespresso pod style tea machine! Who knew!?). On top of that initial wow factor, the staff had left us a complimentary bottle of champagne to celebrate my other half's birthday - a really lovely touch.
