History of the hotel

Rebuilt in the mid 19th century using Cotswold stone, Dumbleton Hall became home to the Eyres family and in the 1930′s the Hall was well known for its popular house parties with regular guests including John Betjeman, later to become Poet Laureate, and the popular Mitford sisters.

During the Second World War the Hall was allegedly considered as a suitable alternative venue for the House of Lords.

The Hall became a hotel in 1959.

An anniversary break

Anon, stayed: August 2019

We thoroughly enjoyed our one night break to celebrate our anniversary at Dumbleton Hall. We had the Cotswold Suite and it was absolutely beautiful: superb ambience and stunning view, tastefully decorated and equipped, a real touch of luxury. The grounds were also lovely:spacious and well maintained, with lovely flower beds and walks. Our dinner was very pleasant and the staff attentive. However, the general feel of the restaurant was crowded; it was difficult to have a private intimate conversation and the breakfast was distinctly average, with a lack of any little extra touches, and indeed some aspects missing or lacking. The general interior aspects of the hotel, with the exception of our own super room, were tired and in need of reorganisation and some refurbishment. The reception staff lacked charm and attention to detail. There were some errors in our booking and bill, and a request for a reserved table in the restaurant was refused. Generally, this was a lovely stay in a wonderful room which was good value for money via Cotswoldbreaks, and we would certainly consider staying again, but in order to achieve excellence the hotel needs to look to detail in its training of staff, altering the restaurant and general internal ambience.

A glorious situation marred by inattention to detail

A&S East Sussex, stayed: July 2019

The bathroom was fine but the room overall seemed cramped. The wardrobe was ridiculous if one was staying for any length of time. The view from our window was restricted by the portico roof. Likewise in the lounge the lovely view was obstructed by putting high backed chairs in the way!
We felt particularly aggrieved that although our deal included a 3 course dinner in the restaurant each evening we were charged for our soup the second evening because we had opted to have it in the bar as we weren t very hungry so forwent the dinner.
We weren t offered any help with our luggage despite being in our eighties - in fact customer care was sadly lacking..I ordered poached eggs on toast from the kitchen and the toast came unbuttered so I specifically asked for it to be buttered the second day but my request was ignored. Staff were friendly but not proactively helpful.

JS, Worcestershire, stayed: June 2019

Dumbleton Hall is set in beautiful grounds - perfect on a sunny evening with seating outside and relaxed atmosphere. Restaurant and bar staff were quietly efficient both at dinner and breakfast. The food was good and the menu offered plenty of choice. The hotel was very clean and well maintained. Our room was very pleasant - air conditioning would have been useful as it was a very hot evening but we were able to manage with the windows left open. The hotel was very quiet during the evening and a good night's sleep was guaranteed with a great bed - lovely and cosy. Definitely on our list to stay longer next time!

Dumbleton stay

RM, North Somerset, stayed: June 2019

The location and setting for the hotel were excellent, however the dining experience was not.
There is a heavy reliance of red meat on the menu, 5 out of 7 main courses, I do feel that a chicken dish should always be an option on the menu.
On our second night, I had asked for a medium steak, it arrived well done and was taken back and replaced, once my wife had finished her meal a replacement arrived, and whilst I was cooked perfectly, was as tough as old boots. The staff did delete a bottle of wine from our bill in recognition.
There is however a lack of atmosphere in the restaurant in the evening, the same harsh overhead lighting is in use as the daytime, some tea light or candles would soften the effect and give a much more welcoming atmosphere.
Our room 12, the most expensive, was fine however the TV could only be watched sitting on the bed with the bed post,( 4 poster), in the middle of the screen, there was a perfectly good sofa and chairs , however the fixed location of the TV made it impossible. We did ask if the hotel had summer weight quilts as the bed had only a very thick winter quilt which made it extremely hot for sleeping.
The staff were the hotels best asset the level of service throughput the hotel was excellent.

Enjoyed our stay

AH, Hampshire, stayed: May 2019

The setting of Dumbleton Hall was amazing and the lead up to the hotel is welcoming and overwhelming. We enjoyed exploring the grounds. The restaurant was a bit outdated and could do with a make-over but the food was thoroughly enjoyable. The only problem was as there was a wedding the following day we very much felt like we shouldn't be there and was very much an after thought from the staff.
